John's Roundup - 7/6/04

So, what are RDZ up to, apart from reporting on news we covered a month ago? (Although to be fair, they can at least get the date right.) Well, they've spotted an entry for BBC WORLDWIDE - AUTUMN 2004 at the BBFC, lasting for 35 minutes and 2 seconds; 1 minute 55 seconds and indeed 3 frames of which are of "RED DWARF - SERIES V". It's pretty obviously a taster for upcoming BBC DVD releases, presumably to be given away free in some way or another. (Unless it's going to be used as an "extra" on BBC releases, of course, but I suspect that's unlikely.) But hey, at least Ricky Gervais gets a credit. Mustn't forget about him, must we, despite the huge amount of other people appearing on the DVD. Anyway, we'll report back when this shows up.

Also on RDZ is a post made by Robert Llewellyn on his guestbook... WHICH I CAN'T LINK TO:

"Suffering from utter exhaustion from a week on the heap, it's hard to make any sense at all, but I'd like to thank all the people who've made kind comments over the past two days. I saw Doug Naylor last week and we talked Red Dwarf movie for hours, and I saw some animations of the film, and laughed myself silly. It is very frustratting for all concerned that the finance for this film, as is the case with all films, is so hard to finally pin down. The brave and tenacious Mr Naylor is anything but downhearted though, he is clearly determined to make it happen, and I'm sure he will. Scrapheap has been going great this year, very good machines, many of which actually work! And I'm really looking forward to next week, after I've slept rather a lot, because it's a fairly dangerous challenge and they always keep you alert. And we are doing another series of Scrappy Races later in the year which I'm really looking forward to. But soon I hope to start some serious work again on this site."

Paragraphs, man! Of course, if you wanted to be negative, you could say that pre-production planned for July and shooting planned for next January is all rather premature when finance still isn't in place... but I'd prefer to concentrate on the fact that I'm going to have to place a bugging device on Robert Llewellyn at DJXI. Well, I'll certainly do some kind of bugging anyway!!!!!!!11

Oh, and Ronald Reagan is dead. Good. Chris Barrie should obviously do some kind of tasteless sketch and put it up on his site. Go on.

Comments

Reagan did a lot more for the world than that whore Princess Diana. Tosser.

Erm, I don't really see what Diana has to do with anything. I don't even know much about her.

What did Reagan do that was so great, anyway?

Ended the Cold War?

Posted by Drzymala at June 7, 2004 09:52 AM

That was on the cards way before Reagan got in, and it didn't stop him authorising the development of the 'Star Wars' programme, which essentially the US saying "I'm alright, Jack" to the rest of the world. I think it's fair to say that in the 'ending' of the Cold War, it was Gorbachev who did most of the running, not that he got any thanks for it in his own country. If Reagan was that much of a peace-maker, he wouldn't have been so keen to station US troops on British soil.

I'm not too fucked if I'm honest, I don't really get into Politics cos they're all cockarses

Posted by Drzymala at June 7, 2004 04:49 PM

Why not vote BNP?

Posted by Ian Symes at June 7, 2004 08:54 PM

I'll probably vote labour because it doesn't matter if the conservatories get in, they will be no different

Posted by Drzymala at June 7, 2004 10:23 PM

Where the hell does Diana come into all of this? I wouldn't class her as a 'whore' either. He he, Les Battersby in Coronation Street still has a Charles and Diana Royal Wedding dish stood on his sideboard! He should be in the Dwarf movie - he'd make a great crew member (I'm only saying this because the crew die).

Posted by overmydeadbody at June 8, 2004 06:03 AM

I apologize for that 'whore' comment. No matter what her personal habits, it was uncalled for. Not because the comment is wrong, but because she is no logner with us. I was upset becasuse of the lack of class (on par w/ Craig Charles, IMHO- well done there, John)in saying Reagan's dead. GOOD. GOOD?!?

I used Diana beacuse, in spite of the fact that she married a guy she knew didn't love her, she slept around (while she was married) - she was treated as a saint, and I don't believe anyone- at the time- would have said "Diana's dead. GOOD. Maybe S.I. can make some sick jokes in her honor."

What has Reagan done? He's devoted much of his lifes to support what he beliefs. If Bill Clinton had been in office during the 80's the Soviet Union would still be on our butts, and the wall in Berlin would still be up - becasue he'd be going, yes they're our enemies, but what can we do to appease them??? Reagan had a great sense of humor and a passion for his beliefs. And there prolly arent that many conservatives around here, but I think he did a great job as Pres. He was active and healthy until he was stricken with Alzheimers - which is a painful way to go not only for the sufferer, but for family and friends. He served two terms in office and then his running mate was elected to a term. Please, show the guy some respect - even if you don't believe in what he stood for. He should be respected because he took a stand.

And he gave me a refund.

Posted by Tony Hawk at June 8, 2004 12:18 PM

I repeat my remarks that the USSR was doomed regardless of Reagan's beliefs on the subject, and I'm afraid I cannot respect the man. The Star Wars project was a mockery of the 'special relationship' between the US and Britain, and is just one of the reasons why I do not mourn his passing. Another is the part he played in the McCarthy witchhunts during the 1950's. Standing up for what you believe in doesn't automatically make you a good person.

Posted by Tanya Jones at June 8, 2004 02:11 PM

*DEE* tbh

Posted by sdfsdfsdf at June 8, 2004 04:51 PM

I don't mourn him cos I never knew him. The only thing that baffles me is how people can be in tears, same for him and when Diana died.

If they knew the man, fair enough, but just to cry cos you admire him? People who I've thought were excellent have died but I've never been upset, gutted that their genius is gone but to shead tears baffles me.

Maybe someone can explain it to me cos seeing random people at his coffin who never met or knew him were in floods. Maybe its just me but I just couldn't

Posted by Drzymala at June 8, 2004 05:18 PM

"He should be respected because he took a stand."

And? Suicide bombers make stands for what they believe in, I'm not going to start respecting those twats anytime soon.

"I'll probably vote labour because it doesn't matter if the conservatories get in, they will be no different"

So if you think both of those parties are no different... why not vote for a party who isn't Labour or Tory? Just a thought.

(Depressingly, the only person round Elmbridge saying that we should vote is the head of the Monster Raving Loony Party. Who should be voted for, coz then we'll get spacehopper lanes on our pavements)

I can't believe how disrespectful some people are...would it have killed anyone to say he died and that Chris Barrie impersonated him? That's all that needed to be said. Anything else is unnecessary. There's no need to build a memorial, or to tear the guy down. He hasn't even done anything political in like ten years, but he's been in politics since maybe the sixties. Just state the facts. He died. Chris Barrie impesonated him. Finito

Posted by RDFan at June 9, 2004 06:26 AM

"would it have killed anyone to say he died and that Chris Barrie impersonated him? (...) He died. Chris Barrie impesonated him. Finito"

I'm assuming said impersonation was of Reagan *being dead*, rather than simply an impersonation Chris Barrie did *after* Reagan's death? Pretty distasteful in either case if you ask me.

Posted by jesley carrion at June 9, 2004 10:34 AM

Are you really that stupid?

Posted by RDFan at June 9, 2004 03:47 PM

> I can't believe how disrespectful some people are...

Sorry. I don't respect Reagan; broadly for the reasons that Tanya has laid out.

And anyone who doesn't respect me is more than welcome to make similar comments when I snuff it. People have to earn respect in my eyes; if people don't think I have then why should they be respectful? Same goes in this situation.

As for just stating the facts... well, if I did that, my news stories would be pretty boring. My only wish is that I'd actually made my tasteless remark into a proper joke; perhaps including some excerpts of the said sketch. It's pretty lazy and boring as it stands.

Of course, if I *did* respect someone who died, I'd probably still make jokes - just of a different sort...

> And anyone who doesn't respect me is more than welcome to make similar comments when I snuff it.

Not to mention before you snuff it.

LIKEWISE YOU CUNT.

Posted by John Hoare at June 9, 2004 04:56 PM

John and I have got constigency plans for what's going to happen when one of us dies, you know.

Posted by Ian Symes at June 9, 2004 05:42 PM

"Are you really that stupid?"

Blast. Hoped to drag you into a pointless explanation there.
