DVD Roundup

IDENTITY WITHIN CLIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111111111!

What's interesting about this is how soon you forget how stylised it all is (you've got Chris Barrie reading out stage directions, for fucks sake - which is brilliant, don't get me wrong) and how soon you're just sitting there watching it like a regular episode. I'll leave off making any proper judgement on it as an episode until I see it all, though - but from what we've seen, it at least seems a damn sight better than Duct Soup.

We also have a few more release dates - for VII, we knew the R2 release date was November 7th and the R1 date was January 10th - the R4 date has now been announced as December 1st. Meanwhile, on VIII, the R2 date is now likely to be February 27th, with the R1 date (as the two releases are not released together this year) back to... May 2nd. Ouch. IMPORT. The R4 date isn not confIrmed yet, but will be February or March.

Veeeeeeeeery interestingly, we're also given a hint that the R2 VIII may also have a gift set released as well, like V - and apparently, it won't be the obvious choice of the Corgi Red Dwarf in there. Anyone have any ideas?

Last, and certainly least, in Czech news (how come Andrew never gets in trouble? OH YES, BECAUSE HE KNOWS THE NAME OF THE FUCKING COUNTRY), they've now got a Re-mastered Series 2 release, with no extras except the obvious audio language and subtitles options (both Czech and English). I still don't understand why countries insist on releasing the Re-mastered versions when Doug Naylor himself has expressed doubts about them, but I suppose it's up to the distributor themselves - and if they want to be idiots, then so be it. And again, whilst the lack of extras is at least understandable (one disc is cheaper than two), it seems such a shame for them to lose out when there's bucketloads of wonderful extras just waiting to be used - and especially when the Czech Republic obviously has a Dwarf fanbase, as evidenced by the websites.

Bah.

I don't think it's idiotic. These are the versions that fans in most foreign countries are familiar with. And while the more hardcore will be interested in seeing the original versions, there simply aren't enough hardcore fans to outweigh those who would be confused and somewhat disappointed that the version they know isn't released.

Perhaps. I'm coloured by the fact that I can't understand why anyone would prefer the Re-mastered versions - even if they saw them first. Not that people like that don't exist...

It would be interesting to have a survey and see which version the majority of Czech fans prefer.

I already placed a rant on the RD Webboard concerning the series VIII DVD release date, so I will not repeat myself here.

However, suffice it to say I will now commit suicide immediately (OK, it's not that bad, but holy crap - May 2?)

I have never imported a disc before in my life, but with no chance of getting the 2005 Ashes in Region 1 format and now this? I'm beginning to wish I had a multiregional player, instead of the piece of crap I own now...

I don't know the situation where you are, but multi-region players are cheap as fuck over here. You could probably even import one...

"You could probably even import one..." (Laughs) - Bastard!

Try convincing the trouble and strife of that....

I bet it's a corgi model dancing Blue Midget that's packaged in with the VIII set. Either that or a written apology from Doug about Pete part 1 & 2.

And yet I still don't want to watch it...if only because I hate things being spoiled for me, no matter how insigificantly. (Also, I seem to remember the Commando Cat sequence being one of the weaker parts of the script, so I'd like to wait until the good scenes are in place to maintain balance.)
