Comedy Directions

I cannot believe we missed this. A BBC Comedy Blog entry on June 24th gives the planned airdate for the Red Dwarf episode of Comedy Connections: August 16th on BBC ONE @ 22:35; the last in the series, due to the last minute interview with Doug Naylor being added. Not only that, but it gives more details as to what to expect in the show:

"Not finished at the time of writing, but all being well it will feature interviews with Chris Barrie, Craig Charles, Norman Lovett, Danny John-Jules, Robert Llewellyn, Hattie Hayridge, Chloe Annett, writers Rob Grant and Doug Naylor, producer Paul Jackson and director Ed Bye. Clips included include 'Spitting Image', 'Carrotts Lib', 'A Kick Up The Eighties', 'Happy Families', 'Saturday Live' and 'The Brittas Empire'."

Exxfuckoff. Nice to see the Happy Families connection being mentioned. Sad to say, I'm a bit behind with this series; I've recorded them, but only watched the first one so far, on The Goodies. Bloody superb it was, as well; the narration even made the point that we only see the same clips over and over again, something the series seems determined not to do. Amusingly, this BBC Comedy Blog entry is very vocal about how stupid the rescheduling of The Goodies episode was: "start by emailing Points of View, tell 'em you're annoyed. Get BBC ONE to acknowledge they disappointed a significant number of viewers." It goes on to say that "The rest of the programmes will be going out on Monday nights at 10.35pm except for July 5th, when theyve scheduled *sigh* Silent Witness. Don't ask." Ho!

The synopsi for the other episodes look great too (Keeping Up Appearances is fucking great, dammit) - but the other show relevant to us is the one on The Young Ones, airing on August 2nd; it'll include clips from Filthy, Rich & Catflap. Let's hope it's acknowledged for being the, dare I use the word, classic that it is, rather than a failed echo of an earlier show. Meanwhile, the one on next Monday (July 19th) is on The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, and includes an interview with Gareth Gwenlan. All proper Dwarfers will spend the entire episode shouting "You're a total gwenlan, you know that?" at the screen whenever he's on, rather than enjoying a great documentary about a great series. Yes.
