Wrinkles Update

The latest then, on Cappsy's little crusade - to find out as much about Wrinkles, the early 80s Radio 4 sitcom by the Comedy Police themselves, as possible. And the good news is that the show featured on Absent Friends on Radio 4 last week; and good O JONO CAPPS has a lovely download of the relevant section. Download it. Listen to it. Doesn't it sound great? "That's easy for you to say..."

Now, however, we get to the bad news. As Cappsy INSISTED, I mailed BBC7 to request them to broadcast it - and got a friendly, but standard reponse, saying they "appreciate being sent ideas for programmes", and that they go into "a suggestions box, which is regularly referred to and/or forwarded to particular members of the team".

Unfortunately, the writer (and one of the researchers) of Absent Friends, one Alan Stafford, posted the following to this OD article. It's not good:

"Hi! I scripted and did some of the research for Absent Friends. The bad news is that BBC archives don't appear to have any episodes of Wrinkles. The extracts we played came from producer Mike Craig's own personal collection. I used to be a regular listener to Wrinkles - it's certainly a bit of a radio curiosity."

Wah!

All may not be lost, however; it's always possible that Mike Craig could loan what he has to the BBC so they can be added to the archives. And someone else must have copies somewhere. Either way, look out for more on the show - various things are happening at Cappsy's end. But they're quite disgusting, so we'll leave it at that.

What's perhaps more interesting about all this is (and I include us in that) - 17 years of Dwarf fandom, and nobody thought of looking into this show before?

The first time I heard about it was in Andrew's interview with David Ross when it was briefly mentioned that David had appeared in a Grant Naylor sit-com called Wrinkles. Other than that, and all the stuff TWH and OD have, there's only two tiny pieces of information about the show on the whole of the internet.

It's obscurity is quite baffling, though, as it's obviously a very inportant piece of work. It was Grant Naylors first real project and it featured a highly respected Producer (Mike Craig) and lead actor (Tom Mennard).

Re: deleted comments. Please don't talk to yourself or post stuff that is *entirely* random. Ta.
