Official: Movie Shooting "slated for May 2004"
Now, this is very interesting. Just under two weeks ago, we reported that Danny John-Jules had given an interview where he said "Filming is due to start in Australia on the Gold Coast early in 2004". However, the last official word from Grant Naylor Productions (given in April) was that shooting was scheduled to start "late September" - ie. NOW.
Well, whilst browsing through the official site to prepare for an upcoming new version of the DVD & Movie FAQ, I spotted the following on the Crewing Information page for the movie:
"Red Dwarf - The Movie may be shot in Australia. Preliminary design work is currently underway and shooting is slated for May 2004."
In other words: that's the first piece of official information from GNP that's been released since last April that we know about, although fuck knows how long it has been up there; here I am chasing up every single rumour that goes off and the latest info is on the official site all along. Whatever, it's extremely exciting (and shut up you cynical bastards at the back) - it shows that things are still happening behind the scenes. Hooray!

We probably won't get to May before it's pushed back, knowing the bad luck this project's had.
The cast are going to be decomposing octagenarians before shooting begins...

May 2004? I'll believe it in May 2004.

Erm, I thought I'd accidentally cleared the box and 'deleted' the first message, so posted another. Take your pick of whichever you fancy.

Actually, I think you should do every post like that.

Same ol' same ol'. I've been hearing about the upcoming movie since I became a fan in 1999. I'll believe it when I see it. (But when I see it I figure it ought to be fantastic!)

Hope its right but I can't see it

You became a fan in 1999, Tiffany? Better late than never, I suppose!

Just give it a chance. I'm *more* happy now something official has come from GNP, to be honest. Remember, so many movies have delays in pre-production - it's not that unusual.

FUCKING MAY? FUCK

(Not that I'm saying it'll definitely shoot in May - but I am confident it'll happen eventually.)

Ive been checking the crew information quite frequently. That info hasnt been there long

I will have beans for tea eventually. Yes, it probably will be made eventually, what is annoying is that they give us dates then nowt happens. They shouldn't say anything til it is 110% certain. Otherwise they're just getting our hopes up only to be dashed time and time again

This information hasn't been publically reported though. Its only a side note on a page within the site where only a few people will spot this info.
Personally, I'm more than happy with the DVD output, so I don't really give a flying badger poo about the movie at the moment.

Suppose we'll just have to wait, I really hope that it does happen next year!

It would be interesting to bet on what gets released on DVD first - the movie or series 8.
It'll be damn close in any case.

If theyre playing it like the original story from series 1, Craig Charles isn't gonna be convincing as the young slob with no career prospects as he'll be in his 40s. He'll end up being like the space version of the Dude from The Big Lebowski. which sounds pretty cool actually.
Posted by Ciaran at September 29, 2003 09:58 PM
Yes, I doubt that anyone would try and pretend that Craig is a 25-year-old, what with his rapidly thinning hair.

Isn't Lister in his late-thirties in the book anyway? I always thought his character seems a bit unconvincing in the early series, I got the impression the part was intended for an older actor.

In the pilot script, he was described as being in his early forties. But Craig Charles was considered perfect for the role, so they youthed him by twenty-odd years.

I have a problem with them in their current years though, some more than others. Chris Barrie is my main gripe, who just doesn't have the comic ability of his former self. I'm not wanting to blame him, people can't help aging, but it's a thing. It's like when people rumour a return of Fawlty Towers, I'm thinking "John Cleese couldn't do that anymore." He might think he's exactly the same physically, and in the Sainsbury's adverts Cleese is clearly *trying* to be Fawlty, but it just doesn't work. In Dwarf, seeing Chris Barrie drinking all that alcohol and "playing" drunk, all that trembling face shit, I just can't see any corrolation with the Rimmer of the early years.
Like I say, not his fault, but the film will suffer unless he tries harder and stops being a fucking pantomime mop.

Might I remind you that Chris's performance in the early days, particularly Series I, was sheer pantomime. There's a ludicrous amount of silly reaction shots in there, none of them any different to the occasional one in Series VIII.
I think it's a bit daft to actually complain about Chris Barrie's acting being pony - that's the whole point of Brittas, is it not? And he does also have sufficient range to do serious stuff as well. I've seen very little evidence that his talents have waned.

Is it me or has the date on the Movie news section changed back to September...This wouldn't be the first time an Item has been altered and then changed back to the original message again..What concerns me about the Movie is the general lack of info available anywhere..With a project this large you would think someone would know something somewhere..Even imdb has remained static for some time..
Posted by Cpt-D at October 1, 2003 01:48 PM
It still says May 2004 here...
As for the lack of info, GNP are in a difficult situation. If they say dates and then change them, people moan. If they give no information out at all, people moan. They just can't win.

I totally agree with you on the GNP thing John and wasn't being critical of the Mother Site..There is no point in releasing non-factual Info and even official announcements are subject to change which is beyond their control..there does seem little info/gossip etc compared to other projects on the net though..Someone posted a Mac McDonald interview yesterday in which he seemed very enthusiastic about his Role as Captain..So Optimism abounds :)
