Ganymede & Titan

U God, Naylor.

Good old Doug Naylor has been interviewed by top movie site Film Force. He mostly talks about The Movie, but also covers such diverse subjects as the DVDs, the possibility of a new series, Red Dwarf USA and the Duke Of Manchester.

Doug Naylor is an anguished man. He has written a screenplay which is generally considered to be pretty top-notch, and he can't get it made. All he needs is some money. In the interview, he jokes about setting up a website for people to send in donations. I would happily contribute, man. Especially after reading tit-bits about the script such as "the best jokes just won't die, and even when I cut them, people scream and shout, "No! That's got to go back in!" There's one sequence that people have gone, "No no no, it slows the story down," and I keep cutting that particular sequence and people just won't allow it to be cut, because it appears to be universally loved".

This is exciting stuff. All we need is money, and Doug mentions that it is possible (though highly unlikely) that this money could show up in time for shooting to start within the next six months. But at least we know that things are happening. Doug's doing his job, he's still in love with the project, he wants it to be perfect and he's had time for rewrite after rewrite. Plus, if the movie isn't made, we'd get a lovely book out of it.

Comments

What's also excellent is that he certainly doesn't rule out a TV series resolution.

Damn fine article that, Ian. I'm looking forward to The Movie more and more as each day passes, so it's good to read something insightful.

If its as good as he thinks then I'm really looking forward to it! The fact the feedback has been good is another plus also!

Glad he's not ruled out a series 9 but he does say not straight away, lets hope we don't have to wait til they're 50 :\

Lets hope some bleeder puts up the pissin' money! >:(

The film will never happen. It's going to be like Hitchhikers, in development hell until it's too late to bother.

Optimism, there.

Sorry, but I really don't think it'll get made.

Posted by Darrell Jones at February 20, 2004 08:51 PM

Hitchhikers will be made methinks

I'm less optomistic about the Movie

Posted by Drzymala at February 20, 2004 08:58 PM

I know Hitchhiker's will be made, but it's too late. Adams has died so they've found an excuse to Yank it up and ruin it.

Well he does say he's been getting good feedback but from his past reputation his 'feedback' has most likely come from a 3 month old baby and it's turtle.

I'm not a racist before anyone starts but having a black Ford Prefect is just for political correctness, as is having a black Lois Lane in the new Superman.

I thought these characters were univerally known as white!?

If they made Shaft into a white man there would be uproar!

Nicely said, Drzymala.

Drzymala - just realised that you *could* think I was taking the piss. I was sincere.

No probs matey! :)

I thought I may be treading a thin line with that last post, hopefully peeps will see what I mean, like yourself! :)

It's nothing to do with 'political correctness' - Mos Def is actually a fairly decent actor - it's just bad casting. Do you really think they went into auditions thinking, "hmm, if we don't have a black actor in this we'll be accused of racism"?

He may be a good actor, thats not in question. But yes, I do think its for political correctness. Everything has to be politically correct in this day and age.

I'm not racist and if anyone sees my comments as racist then they haven't a clue what racism is.

not saying thats your view on my post Simon :D

What do you actually mean by political correctness, though? The only thing the producers are guilty of is a misunderstanding of the Ford Prefect character and his relationship with Arthur. I suspect Mos Def might even be quite good in the role, but it won't really be Hitchhiker's. Rather than shoehorning a black character in, I suspect their main motivation was that one of the lead actors should be recognisable to an American audience. Idiotic commercialism rather than political correctness.

either way shite :D

I guess Australia means we don't get any lottery funding - unlike Sex Lives of the Potato Men which has been widely destroyed by critics.

Maybe the BBC will come to the rescue. Now that there's no more ludicrously expensive money being spent on Walking with Dinosaurs (so expensive it was in the Guiness Book of Records) they should have some money to spare - Let's just pray Doctor Who gets the same budget as Tracy Beaker.

Or maybe if Doug Naylor promises the BBC rights to broadcast the move within a year or so of it's cinematic release they could have an pre-production payment.

That's what I would do, though I don't know if it could work.

I've read some of the bollocks written about Sex Life Of The Potato Men (how the hell are The Film Council supposed to know how the critics will react before production has started?), and all I could think was "that money could be spent on Dwarf".
