Celebrities Disfigured
Well, it wasn't exactly a mask, but, you know. We've got a big ol' transcript and analysis of Celebrities Disfigured; the Channel 4 documentary that aired last Monday, starring Craig Charles as a burns victim. Sorry it took so long; my employers are cunts. Speaking of which, John is away on a training course until Wednesday. He's finally learning to tie his shoelaces.
You know, typing that convention transcript has really got me in a DJ mood. Let us know if you're going, and don't be strangers. In three weeks time, look out for the lanky chap with girly hair and the homosexual Harry Potter.

"Craig starts by explaining that science-fiction fans are weirdos; pathetic, miserable individuals who need to escape from their pain-filled existence."
What an absolute tosser.

Does anybody remember when Craig used to defend science fiction fans? I seem to remember a BBC interview in which he defended fans - it was a half-hearted attempt, but apparently he's changed in the intervening years. Right now, as far as I'm concerned, someone ought to take him out into a blizzard, remove his pyjamas, and just leave him to it.

I must say, he's not exectaly coming across as a very nice man, recently. He seems to have his digs at the 'pathetic and sad' fans where ever he can; on the DVD commentaries on the DVD interviews and even on that Series IV easter egg. Git.
Excellent article though, Ian.

I don't have a problem with Mr. Charles.
(I realise this is probably due to personal emotional problems with refusing to accept myself as a true science-fiction fan because of the social stigma it carries.)

My recent series of articles actually came about partly because of the negative connotations the term "science fiction" causes amongst those who are pseudo-intellectual. Partly it's the name - David Hartwell, in his seminal Age of Wonders, tried to explain why "'science fiction' is the wrong and only name for it."
But that's another story.

I'll be at DJXI :)

I'll be at DJXII. I'll be out of studenthood and hopefully into wage-earning by then, y'see.

What Craig did to the other cast members is pretty cruel. It's not as though they actually did ignore him because of his face, and then they felt bad about it afterwards. I'm sure if anyone kept saying 'where's Dave Lister' in a stupid voice they would get ignored. There's nothing discriminating about that. Craig's such a twat at times.

WHAT?? ISN'T CHARLES A BIG STAR TREK FAN??? WHAT A TOSSER!!!
Posted by Tiffany at May 24, 2004 06:33 AM
Also, if he'd been to a convention before, he'd know about Chris Barrie's questioning policy, rather than trying to make him look like an insensitive twat for the sake of some sensationalist television.
Way to stitch up your mates, Craig.

Craig Charles is just insecure cos he's a big geek himself. Wasn't he one of the Captains in Channel 4's rather lame Sci-fi quiz, "Space Cadets"?
Posted by Pete Martin at May 24, 2004 10:36 AM
Yep, and Rob and Chloe were guest stars.

Way to be a complete gimp towards your fans and co-stars, Craig.
On the plus side- DJ in three weeks or so! Featuring the cast members who aren't gimps! Hmmmm, there's an idea- someone could ask them a question about their reaction to Craig's stunt here.
And for once, could someone ask the cast "which episodes are your LEAST favourite"?

Or "how much do you regret doing nothing memorable in your lives besides Red Dwarf?"
Posted by Elise Harpinger at May 24, 2004 11:33 PM
HEY! I wont have that. Danny John-Jules was in "Maid Marian and her Merry Men".
Posted by Pete Martin at May 25, 2004 09:58 AM
Not to mention Chris in Brittas, Spititng Image and numerous radio shows.
Oh, and Rob's excellent novels and Scrapheap Challenge.
Posted by Cappsy at May 25, 2004 01:01 PM
And 'I Lovett'. And the standup careers of Barrie/Lovett/Hayridge. And Son of Clich.
And Llewellyn's genuinely fab 'I Camcorder' series from a few years ago.
Whoever said they haven't had any other memorable projects is either ignorant or a twat.
Posted by Darrell Jones at May 25, 2004 01:30 PM
Or both.

"And Llewellyn's genuinely fab 'I Camcorder' series from a few years ago."
I remember I Camcorder being really great as well. What was the catchphrase Robert used to end every episode with? 'If I camcorder, you camcorder'? Other than that I can only remember them recording a silly series of accidents, Robert standing on a spade and things, and a wedding episode. I've never even owned a camcorder but it was essential viewing.

Definitely deserves a repeat. I remember him showing you how you could recreate that famous shot from Jaws (Roy Schneider on the beach)using just a wheelchair and a zoom button...

I'm looking forward to the commentary without Charles (yes, he definitely should be always known as 'Charles' from now on, don't you agree?). It's absolutely crazy that he is the most famous person out of the Dwarf crew (even my mum knows who he is for the sake of fuck). Shouting on Robot Wars are basically his credits post-Dwarf. Until he does something commendable he is in my bad books...

Charles is a cunt.

"yes, he definitely should be always known as 'Charles' from now on, don't you agree?"
Since that's my first name and he's a prat- NO.

"Since that's my first name and he's a prat- NO."
I share my name with arguably the worst two episodes of Red Dwarf. Ever.
You just have to live with it.

Kill yourself.

Naturally, I will commit suicide immediately.

I just realised that on your page about mistakes in the DVD Commentaries, most of the mistakes are related to the afore mentioned Mr Charles.
Maybe he isn't such a fan of the show after all, and just has a large cranium...
Posted by Mr Flibble at May 31, 2004 11:54 PM
I wonder if he's not going to conventions because he knows he's gonna
a) be so uncomfortable
b) so unwelcome
c) asked the most awkward questions ever.
d) know we'll be at his throat.
Your views?
Posted by Daniel Stephenson at June 26, 2004 05:21 PM
e) not paid enough
HINT: The answer is e).
