That's gotta be Smeg Ups!

Honestly, you wait a whole week for a site update, then two of them turn up at once. Firstly, there's our guide to the Series III Smeg Ups. As well as transcripts of all 29 of the buggers, we've added some lovely annotations, covering all the speculation and oddness that has ocurred since the DVD was released two and a half weeks ago. (Two and a half weeks! Can you believe it?)

Next, a big overhaul of the Edit News article. As well as moving it from Articles to Documents, which makes a lot more sense, we've split it into two sections: Broadcast and Videos. Well, it was getting rather big. Furthermore, a lot of info has been added, such as issues raised by the DVD, UK Gold edits (thanks to Darrell for reminding us) and the recent repeat fiasco.

Nice.

That's all I have to say for myself.

Great 'Broadcast' feature, and listed together some of the Cuts seem ludicrous, UK gold, I find almost impossible to watch due to the adverts, but
I think I'll watch a few Blackadders etc to see if there are similar cuts. I believe there are too many double standards in TV, especially on the 'Racial' and 'Sexual' fronts. Comedy seems to be hit more than Drama and Documentaries by the PC brigade.....

Hmmm, Just one point on language and Content..Is it not odd that 'Billy Connelly' for instance is hailed as a Comedy 'God' by the TV heirarchy and was the subject of an hour long award the other night which contained more F's than a Welsh tourist guide, when Dwarf has the word Bastard deleted ?...Maybe it's because he's now deemed as one of the 'Lovies'. Also the Great Python never shyed away from using risque material yet you don't hear the 'powers that be' calling for them to be cut do you....Hmmmm One Rule Indeed..

I can't watch UK Gold due to ads either. Or the logo.

I tried to watch 'The Daemons' today on this Doctor Who weekend thing, but two eps in and I just grabbed the video of it instead.

"Golf...(pause)...strangling animals."

The 'plinky plonky' music to ther PJP logo had me totally baffled the other day. What the hell is it and why does it only appear on one episode? I never remeber it being there in the repeats I have seen.

Posted by Cappsy at November 23, 2003 01:26 PM

It's always been there; it struck me when I first saw it. I suppose Backwards was edited first; and they decided against using it for the rest of the eps. As for what it is, it's just a nice little sound effect that accompanies the endcap; another example include the clang on the Broadsword logo at the end of later episodes of Knightmare.

Incidentally, have you all noticed that the Starbug whoosh at the beginning of all the eps in Series III is slightly differently timed for each episode - indicating it was a last-minute idea applied after the titles had been created?

I had never spotted that.

I am very pleased that GNP have decided to use the broadcast versions of the epiodes on the DVD. This way, the hardcore fans are happy because they have the video release versions on VHS and broadcast versions on DVD. Non hardcore fans couldn't give a fuck rither way, im sure. It a very nice touch by them.

I'de love to hear the orignal music for the Terrorform crash seen on the V DVD. Here's hoping.

RIMMER: What are we going to do?
LISTER: Well, I say let's get out there.
RIMMER: Lister, you're ill. Just relax and leave this to us.
Cue a huge laugh, for no reason.

In the edited version, Lister actually says:
"Well, I say let's get out there an"

Yes, I can see what they were trying to do. It seems they were trying make it look like Rimmer cut him off before he swore, thus making it look seemless. Shame they're a bunch of talentless morons. Ah well.

I doubt it'll be the original, James Last music on the DVD - if they had problems clearing it for television (so bad that they had to go back and re-edit it), they'd have even worse ones for a DVD release. Not that it really matters, of course - for most of us, the only one we know is the revised musak version.

I wonder why they had to go back and get rid of the James Last version, anyway? Did it not get cleared in the first place, or was it cleared and then circumstances changed, or what?

MAYBE JAMES LAST SAW MELTDOWN AND CRIED.

"It seems they were trying make it look like Rimmer cut him off before he swore, thus making it look seemless."

No, it's just a poor edit. It would have been pretty much impossible to make it seem naturalistic in any way. If you work with sound editing you'll know that the word "there" would have run naturally into the opening vowel of "and" - "thereand", so if they'd cut out the "and" completely, the "there" would have sounded unnaturally broken. If they'd wanted to make it seem like Rimmer was cutting Lister off before he swore, the neatest edit would have been after the hard "t" of "out". The laugh would have still have felt like the last two thirds of a laugh though. If they were going to edit the sentence at all, they should have removed it totally in my opinion, that's what I would have done, to make the editing less sloppy.

Like I said. Talentless morons.

You idiots. Edit News aren't meant to be updated! Some nice spottings there, well done.

Not really an edit but something odd I spotted in a scene near the beginning of Timeslides the other week. Holly had a timecode. Not a futuristic prop-type effect but a genuine "TCR 00:00:00:00" format video timecode, as used in video editing and seen on the rushes segment on the Hitch-Hikers DVD, that appeared to be there accidentally. It wasn't in the fullscreen Holly close-ups, just when she appears slightly out of frame on the screen in the background but it was definitely there. Can someone do screengrabs? My copy of the series three DVD is still in HMV at the moment.

While we're on the subject of odd spottings, this seems as good as place to mention it as any: at the end of Room 101 last week (guest: Hattie Hayridge-alike Linda Smith) there was a clip of some Oxford lads singing an operatic version of Bohemian Rhapsody. But was the one on the extreme right Howard Goodall? It looked like him, sounded like him, he was at Oxford, and singing Queen songs as operettas seems like something he'd do. I really should have mentioned this before the Sunday repeat but it slipped my mind. Ah well. Probably wasn't him anyway.

Posted by Squidy at November 24, 2003 07:44 PM

I've noticed the timecode before, but I'd got so used to it I'd forgotten how odd it is. I can't do a screengrab, as my DVD-ROM drive is in a box on my bedroom floor, gathering dust.

Interestingly, watching RD on UKG2 the other day (The Last Day), they'd cut chunks out of the ep to keep it down to 30mins including ads (the bits I can remember that were cut is the start of the scene where Rimmer/Lister first discuss Kryten shutting down, and the first section of the last scene with the confrontation with Hudzen). This doesn't happen with the UK Gold showings, which give 40mins for the episodes.

I've never understood why this happens to programmes - surely with a budget-conscious repeats channel, it's ridiculous to spend time and money going into an edit suite to edit the episode - and also have to spend more money repeating programmes because they take up less time? To say nothing about the integrity of the show, obviously.

Anyway, I'm sure there will be entire article about this detailing all the edits at some point. Meanwhile, I'll just repeat my plea that I wish something slightly more obscure was shown; there are so many Dwarf repeats happening at the moment (BBC TWO, UK Gold, UKG2) that it's ridiculous. I know ratings are an issue, but I wish some balance was struck, particuarly with BBC TWO - I'm sure the BBC could find something more in the public interest to broadcast, what with Dwarf getting a decent DVD release.

Incidentally, does anyone here watch the show broadcast anywhere other than the UK? Anyone notice any edits there? (Apart from language dubbing, and the use of the Re-mastered series.)
