DVD Section Updates
Yes folks, with exactly one month to go before the long-awaited Series III DVD is released, we've got our arse in gear with two marvellous updates to our DVD section. Firstly, we've got a definitive preview of the disc, collating all the information gathered from the official site, combined with our own opinions and predictions.
Secondly, G&T reader Darrell Jones has contributed his own article! It's called D.V.Don't, and it concentrates on the negative aspects of the first two releases, mainly from a technical viewpoint. Thanks for that, Darrell. We've (that is, John and Ian) have added our own response to this, and you're invited to do the same, by adding your comment to this very story. Interactivity is a marvellous thing.
Comments
I'll defend myself on one thing - the 'laziness' comments were largely projected in the direction of Ross McGinley, and largely because I've had major disagreements with virtually everything he's ever touched, and therefore am a bit biased. I regard him as the nemesis of the comedy fan - he turned down pitches for extras on the Blackadder discs despite strong opposition from elsewhere at BBCWW, and masterminded the worst exercise in Python butchery in existence (the appalling 'Best Of' boxset) to name a couple of idiotic things he's responsible for. I could go on, but I won't, as I think you get my point that I don't believe he should hold the position he does.
Otherwise, my article was far too nitpicky and audiophilic anyway - I should have broadened my outlook a bit. Oh well. Thanks for publishing it, anyway.

Have you investigated the possibility of getting yourselves a pre-release copy? If not, it might be worth a try...
Posted by Simon at October 4, 2003 03:26 AM
Ian prefers to watch his two days after everyone else.
Posted by Nik at October 4, 2003 10:15 AM
FUCK OFF NIK
We would ask for a pre-release copy, but if GNP gave us one, they'd have to give one to Matt, Cappsy, Rick Mason, Bob from TRDZ, Big Blake, Paul Gannon, etc. Besides, I find the anticipation adds to my enjoyment of the DVDs. And I *will* get it on Saturday this year, even if I have to suck bullets out of two cashiers and a security guard at Woolworths.

If i've said it once then I may have said it a second time too. Play.com deliver on the satrday before release :)
Posted by Cappsy at October 5, 2003 11:53 PM
I know, Cappsy. I was relunctant to pre-order them last time, as I didn't have much money, and if they were late, I'd be fucked. However, I am now rich, so can afford to take the risk. Hurrah!

There is a deep sense of satisfaction know your one of the first people in the country to get your hands on a copy of the DVD. Smug mode, indeed :)
Posted by Cappsy at October 6, 2003 12:11 PM
Play have been showing a worrying tendency lately not to deliver the Saturday before release, for me at least. My Human Remains DVD came about three days after the release date, and was pre-ordered quite well in advance. Hopefully they'll sort themselves out in time for Red Dwarf III.

My Coupling series 3 arrived on the saturday. I still have faith.

Fucking hell! Someone's started a rant about my badly-written DVD moan on the Doctor Who Restoration Team forum!

And someone's complained about the word 'cunt' not being censored!
Posted by Ian Symes at October 16, 2003 08:19 PM
Play clearly don't love me anymore, as my Knowing Me, Knowing You DVD failed to arrive today.
If it's only me they're not getting stuff to early, you might finally get a Red Dwarf DVD before me, Ian.
Posted by Nik at October 19, 2003 02:58 AM
I ordered from Play this time on Cappsy's recommendation a few months back. They're usually very good price wise anyway.
Posted by Joey at October 19, 2003 02:16 PM
Play delivered my Brittas Empire DVD yesterday. Thus they love me.
Posted by Ian Symes at October 19, 2003 02:55 PM
Hmm. I ordered Red Dwarf III on 14/7/2003, so that should be far enough in advance to get it on the Saturday, but then again, I ordered Knowing Me, Knowing You on 25/3/2003, so I fear the worst*.
(*The worst obviously being Ian getting it before me.)
Posted by Nik at October 20, 2003 01:14 AM
I actually had faith in the reddwarf.co on-line shop to get it to me on time...I'll keep you posted...

I think Darrell hit the nail on the head by mentioning Black Adder above, Having got all of Black Adder on DVD and various other BBC DVD's I have to say Red Dwarf stands head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to extra's and giving the Fans what they want. I admit sound quality, as long as it's adequate is not a major issue as far as I'm concerned and I'd much rather the Budget was spent on extras than sound quality. We are informed by Andrew Ellard that the success of ser 1 & II has given them more dosh to spend on III & IV, so maybe sound is something they will improve upon...As a huge fan of Black Adder, HHGTTG and Fawlty Towers etc it is my oppinion that Red Dwarf have done us proud.I'm about to buy the 'Reggie Perrin' boxed set so I'm eager to see what has been done to that in the way of Goodies.Meanwhile there is always room for Improvement, but Red Dwarf DVD's remain the best I've seen so far...

I actually think that the H2G2 DVD is better than the first two Red Dwarf ones, largely due to the inclusion of that 'Don't Panic' video made about a decade ago and some studio rushes.
Then again, the series 3 and 4 ones sound like they will rival H2G2, what with their 9-hour documentaries and free dog biscuits and everything.
Posted by Darrell Jones at October 21, 2003 12:37 AM
I suppose the thing is, I would have bought HGTTG and Red Dwarf on DVD whatever..So any extras are bound to be a bonus...So much more could have been done with Black Adder though...

Well, my KMKY DVD* turned up today, the day after release. I fear my days of getting Red Dwarf DVDs two days early are over. Gits.
(*It's very nice, by the way.)
Posted by Nik at October 21, 2003 09:24 PM
I got KMKYWAP today as well, Nik. But, I got Brittas, which was also released yesterday, on Saturday. They've also recently sent me (or at least tried to, but my card was fucking refused) The Simpsons, Phoenix Nights and Look Around You early. So it's not Play, it must be just that particular release. Ominously, though, it's a BBC release...
Posted by Ian Symes at October 21, 2003 09:43 PM
Please no-one mention KMKYWAP - I'm having to exercise intense self-control as I'm forcing myself to put it away until Christmas, whilst hearing all these excited tales of it containing free whores, the secret of alchemy, and a really nice pen. Likewise Red Dwarf III, League of Gentlemen S3, OFAH S6, IAP2, Let It Be, the last few Dr Who discs and anything else good that comes out in the next two months.
The main reason for saving all these discs is to prevent me having a nervous breakdown after sitting through this year's Only Fools and Horses Christmas special - last year's nearly caused me to slip into a coma.

Well,This Year it sounds like 'Porridge' instead with Ronnie Barker making a one off comeback....

You won't be getting Red Dwarf III straight away? Get the fuck out of my website.
Posted by Ian Symes at October 22, 2003 08:30 PM
I'll be buying it straight away, if that's any consolation... just saving it for Christmas.
I am the King of Self Control, that's presuming I don't go insane during the first week of December.
Posted by Darrell Jones at October 22, 2003 08:54 PM
Oh, man. You won't last. I bet you I can make you crack by the end of November.
Posted by Ian Symes at October 22, 2003 09:16 PM
I don't want your home-made crack. I won't touch anything unless it's pure base.
Posted by Darrell Jones at October 22, 2003 11:07 PM
*applauds*

I just snotted in the uni computer room thanks to that.
Bravo.

Shush, I was going to do an article about that in the week.
Posted by Ian Symes at December 14, 2003 10:35 PM
Oh - well, err, it's not changed really, honest.
