Hold My Vindaloo

Red Dwarf is to appear alongside the most over-rated series ever, The Office in a promotional sampler for HMV.

The Red Dwarf bit will be from Backwards and will last for 1 minute and 8 seconds. We don't know from which episode the The Office clip will be, but it will last for fifty seconds longer. It's a fucking disgrace. No news yet on whether this will be a DVD or a video, or whether there will be other things on it. I'd say that it's unlikely that HMV would give something away that's only 3 minutes and 6 seconds long, though. We'll let you know as soon as we see it in the shops.

Probably as part of one of those ScreenExtra things or whatever they are that they give free when you spend a tenner or something.

Oh, you've reminded me to write something - a ranty article about the first two Red Dwarf DVDs. If you can make use of it, great - otherwise I'll post it on some forum or other.

It's not a general complaint - I think they're great for the most part. But there *are* a few things I need to get off my chest. Since they seem to get unanimous praise everywhere, I think I may have a crack at restoring a bit of equilibrium.

Excellent! We can definitely make use of that, Darrell; post it to comments@ganymede-titan.info and we'll shove it up. One thing missing from G&T is a range of views from other people in the articles.

Darrell. Are you sure not jus6t being counter for the sake of it?

Posted by Cappsy at October 1, 2003 12:16 AM

Why would I have views "for the sake of it"? The fact of the matter is I genuinely have issues with certain elements of the discs.

I'm off for a shower - when I return I shall write it.

The only problem I have the DVD's is that they are not on picture disks.

Posted by Cappsy at October 1, 2003 12:32 AM

The only problem I have with them is that there are a few of things missing. I'd *love* to have the Mugs Murphy animation on there, or the whole of Rupert Bates' speech as the Chef. I do know there were a few things that they wanted to include but couldn't; Helen Norman said the following in her Mr. Flibble interview: "We did have even more material that we wanted to use but we were somewhat thwarted by copyright issues and in some cases a lack of supporting paperwork."

The one thing I really do dislike though is the cutting out of loads of the model footage - see the relevant question on this interview:

Okay, it's all done and dusted and emailed to yers. Hope it's not too incomprehensible.

To me Only Fools and Donkeys is the most over rated ever. I don't follow the public opinion like a sheep.

Posted by Drzymala at October 1, 2003 07:41 AM

But Only Fools and Horses *is* a superb comedy series though - excellently written and performed with a real sense of chemistry throughout. If you look at its peaks (81-83, 89-90 and 96) it's pure magic.

Posted by Darrell Jones at October 1, 2003 02:40 PM

No, it *is* to some people, fair enough that you think it is :) I just think its vastly over rated. I'd rather watch summat like Blackadder every time :\

Something that annoyed me with the Red Dwarf series 1 DVD was the exclusion of outtakes from the smeg-ups section that had already been on the Smeg Outs video. Two that spring to mind were the lovely extended bits for the ends of "Me2" and "Balance of Power" - Lister corpsing after saying "Souper" and them holding that pose for so long, and Lister's landing and limp after saying "How did you do Mr Lister SIR" and jumping into the air.

I mean if they were mostly going to put already-seen stuff on the DVDs, they could have put more effort into getting ALL of it on.

Absolutely, Stool. That was completely ridiculous. Another problem with the Series II one is the Series I Drive Room; but GNP have said that they just didn't have the budget to do another room. Which is fair enough; I'd rather they spent the money on the extras.

Don't get me wrong - I love the DVDs. I love nearly everything about them. It's just that there are a few niggles, that's all. When you compare them to most comedy DVDs, you realise just how lucky we are.

Posted by John Hoare at October 1, 2003 07:37 PM

Blimey, they did miss out the BoP ending didn't they? I hadn't realised until then - although I did notice the lack of the Me2 one. There are annoying subliminal snatches of audio topping and tailing some of the excerpts on that disc, down to laziness.

I've just re-read that article I did last night. God, it's dull.

Of which article dost though speak?

Posted by Piano Stool at October 1, 2003 08:32 PM

Darrell's written an article for us, which will be published on Friday. The anticipation is unbearable.

I don't have the series II DVD - does it have the outtake where Craig Charles is saying the jeep/sleep line, and then starts corpsing as Chris Barrie holds his straight face? It's really similar to the "souper" outtake from Me2, and on the Smeg-Outs video was part of a string of clips of pretty much the same scenario - Chris Barrie making Craig Charles laugh by keeping a really straight face. Since the series I DVD skipped both the Me2 and BoP ones I was wondering whether series II did the same.

Posted by Piano Stool at October 2, 2003 07:19 PM

Yes, that clip was included in the Series II compilation. The Balance of Power clip *was* in Series I as well. I've seen it with my own eyes.

There's a full guide to the compilations in the DVD section of this site.

And I didn't even think to check that myself.

Twat!

Posted by John Hoare at October 2, 2003 08:57 PM

Well, if you're sure I won't argue. I remember it not being there, but perhaps it was and I was just pissed off that the Me2 clip wasn't there, and merged the two with this crap memory of mine. It's been a while since I saw it - I took the DVD back to the shop several months ago.
