Ian's Newsround - 06/02/04

Crikey. News-a-rama! Let's kick off with the Series III replacement discs. This has come about because "a small number" of people "apparantly" had "player compatibility issues". Stop trying to sugarcoat it, for God's sake. Surely it's the disc that should be made compatible with the player, not the player made to be compatible with the disc? Anyway, just phone 0870 241 0624, send them everything, and they'll issue you with a replacement. I might well buy a new copy to send off; the originals will soon be quite rare.

In other news, there's a new add-on to the excellent Red Dwarf RPG. Now, I strongly recommend everyone buys the book immediately. I have a dream of a massive game session at G&T Towers. By which I mean my bedroom. Anyway, I've had a look for the Red Dwarf RPG AI Add-On 1.0 on the Deep 7 website, but it's nowhere to be found. Just as well; I've always heard that it was illegal to download PDF-file images. DYSWIDT?

Some further tit-bits. The punctuation nightmare that is Lara Croft: Tomb Raider: The Cradle Of Life, 'starring' Chris Barrie, is now out on DVD. I've not seen the film; nor do I have any desire to. As we reported AGES AGO, there is to be a little cast reunion at the London Film and Comic Con. In other convention news, Craig and Robert will be at Memorabilia in April, which is always good. And Ms. Chloe Annett will be in Casualty tomorrow, BBC ONE, 8:10pm. But will the Holby A&E team be able to resuscitate her career? Stay tuned!

And finally, there's a new wallpaper, based on the Series IV DVD cover, available to download in three different sizes from here. It's really rather nice. From the Dwarfy evidence, it would appear that Chris Veale is good at creating still images, and it only goes tits up when they move.

Both discs and the box?! Why not just disc 2? Bah, it'll cost about a quid to send that off. I've got enough stuff to pay high postage on at the moment as it is.

When one of the discs in the 'Doctor Who and the Daleks' box set was faulty, all they asked for was the faulty disc - not the whole damn bundle. Gah.

Why can't they just ask whilst on the phone for you to read out the barcode from the back of the box, and then send the discs straight out?

Are they IDIOTS or something? Why should I have to spend about 1.50 sending off the whole fucking box when it's not my fault? Twats.

Tomb Raider sux! Croft is Ugly!

And as for The PDF joke,

Yes IDSWYDT!

I've been telling that one for years man!

LMAO!!

"But will the Holby A&E team be able to resuscitate her career? Stay tuned"

Ah, I needed a good laugh :D

Darrell take your medication and CALM THE FUCK DOWN!

And Ian, I will be doing the same as you with the DVD's. Allthough i already have two copies of the Series III. I always knew there was a reason why I bought two...

Posted by Cappsy at February 6, 2004 11:07 PM

Sorry, I'm just annoyed at the fact that they haven't thought this through at all.

Posted by Darrell Jones at February 6, 2004 11:35 PM

TI does seem odd that they are asking for the whole lot. I'm not going to complain as I have two copies anyway.

Oh, and Hattie will be in the post tomorrow for you, Darrell.

Posted by Cappsy at February 6, 2004 11:50 PM

Oh, excellent! Thanks.

Our player is buggered anyway (frequently stops playing any disc for no good reason) but I have noticed a couple of things wrong with the season three disc.

Are these problems related to the bonus features selection screen (in the officers quarters) because I always seem to have trouble there.

Posted by Adam Bailey at February 7, 2004 02:16 AM

Does anyone else get the problem of the music cues stopping a few seconds before they're supposed to?

Posted by Cappsy at February 7, 2004 09:56 AM

Adam - yes, the bunkroom menu doesn't work in most DVD players.

Cappsy - I've not noticed that, but I'll have another look.

And I agree that sending the whole package off is a bit daft. Aside from the logistical problems, you're without six lovely episodes on shiny disc for a week or so.

what ever happened to the arcade section you were going to put up. Have u abandoned the idea all together.

"Why can't they just ask whilst on the phone for you to read out the barcode from the back of the box, and then send the discs straight out?"

I think maybe people would be able to just read the barcode down the phone without having bought the DVD. Not sure though.

I'll get round to it at some point, Ben - there's a few other things I need to do before it goes up first.

"I think maybe people would be able to just read the barcode down the phone without having bought the DVD. Not sure though."

As long as they weren't told in advance that the barcode and disc code on the inside rim (or whatever) would be required, I can't see how the system could be 'cheated', really.

Posted by Darrell Jones at February 7, 2004 01:57 PM

I've just rang said (bloody expensive) number, was kept in a queue for 5 minutes, was answered by some clueless Scottish berk who wan't aware of a problem with the discs at all, then left for 2 minutes in silence, and upon his return he told me to take the disc back to the shop if I wanted a refund.

FUCKING THANKS FOR THAT.

So I'm still no better off.

"As long as they weren't told in advance that the barcode and disc code on the inside rim (or whatever) would be required, I can't see how the system could be 'cheated', really."

I bet that anybody armed with somebody else's DVD of Red Dwarf 3, plus the receipt, could answer any questions thrown at them as if it were their own copy.

Alternatively, let's say I did buy a copy of Red Dwarf 3 myself, and phoned up said number, only to be told I didn't have to return anything for my replacement disc(s) to be sent. I would personally think "cool", wait for my replacements to come through the post, and then get my money back for the faulty discs in one of the high street stores.

Posted by jesley carrion at February 7, 2004 05:35 PM

I would just be wanting them to send the replacement disc 2 on its own, as Warner did with the faulty 'Dr Who and the Daleks'. You can't sell a 'disc 2' on its own.

Posted by Darrell Jones at February 7, 2004 09:25 PM

I didn't know about the 'Dr Who..' process, but I think it was Warner who fucked up the Terminator and Silence of the Lambs mastering so the discs went cloudy and couldn't be read after they reached a certain age. The discs actually had to be returned to them for replacements to be sent, but it was a freepost system.

The moral of the story: If yer gonna ask for faulty goods to be sent to you, at *least* pay for it yourself.

Posted by jesley carrion at February 7, 2004 09:53 PM

I've finally got an address to send it back to. I'd post it here to save hassle but you need to ring the incredibly expensive phone number to get a customer number.

Grr.
