EMPIRE SMELLS

Ah. I like it when people send us e-mails. It means I have to do bugger all and still get a good news story. (It also means we get to report on stuff that we don't find out about; so please, contact us if you spot anything interesting.) Anyway: many thanks for the following, guys.

First off, Big Blake has sent us a review of the IV DVD from the March issue of Empire. Written by Chris Hewitt, it is frankly RUBBISH:

Red Dwarf Series 4
1991, Cert. 12, BBC Worldwide.
Out: February 16. Buy: DVD, 19.99
Cherish this DVD, for Red Dwarf virtually pole-vaulted the shark immediately after this fourth series. Writers Rob Grant and Doug Naylor have fun with sci-fi conventions in a number of inventive episodes, including the introduction of Chris Barrie's Ace Rimmer ("Smoke me a kipper, I'll be home for breakfast"), but the real jewel in the crown is Robert Llewellyn's preening android, Kryten, who gets all the best lines and plots. Without a doubt, Red Dwarf's greatest smegging series.
DVD extras: Auntie Beeb's commitment to excellent extras continues, with commentaries, documentaries, deleted scenes, outtakes and Ainsley Harriott in Can't Smeg, Won't Smeg. Magnificent. CH
Show: 4 stars
Extras: 5 stars

Quite apart from misquoting one of the most famous lines ever in Dwarf, if anyone can pinpoint exactly why Holoship and the rest of V is crap, we'd love to know. I would respectfully suggest that Chris GETS SOME BETTER OPINIONS.

Meanwhile, here is a bit of juicy hearsay for you. Ben Nelson has got in touch with us to say that his friend went to one of the Incompetence signing events, and asked Rob about the DVDs. He replied with the following: "They have been very successful. If I was approached I would like to be involved in the next two."

Yeah, yeah, I know. It doesn't prove a thing. It's a nice thought though, isn't it?

I think he should at least be involved with VI, as it was his favourite series of all. If they were only brave enough, I'd like GNP to ask Rob to do a commentary for an episode or two of series VII and VIII, even as an easter egg. It would be lovely to just hear a wholly negative review, somebody slagging something off in a really informed manner, the odd "I can't believe they did that to the programme", "Kochanski is rubbish," and "Why the fuck is Kryten acting like a pantomime dame?!"Would be really great. And I'm SERIOUS. I'd love to hear somebody who was previously involved in creating the series crying at what has happened to his baby. So far I've not bothered to get any series of Red Dwarf on DVD. A commentary from Rob on VII or VIII would change that.

A Grant commentary is possible. Let's remember that GNP have booked some different commentary session for Series V and Vi to record the Fan Commentaries. Considering these are only for one episode and one session usually covers three episodes then it's likely they will get thier moneys worth and bring in some other people to do guest commentaries alos. people such as Mike Tucker or indeed Rob Grant.

And yes, that Review was arse.

If they are doubling up the fan sessions to accommodate Grant and Tucker commentaries I will stop complaining.

and i thought this topic was actually about star wars for some bizaare reason.....but now i know what ur on about - that review smells seriously of poo :(

I think that it will take longer to get fans settled down into the commentary than it would the cast and other people, so it's fair to assume they've given it more time for that reason, not to fit other people into the same slot. There'll be a lot of calming them down to do, getting them to talk into the microphone not the camera, to come into the booth and stop hovering around gawping at the Authentic Red Dwarf Poster, etc.
