Ian's Newsround - 30/01/04
45 deleted scenes. Fucking hell.
Well, one deleted scene and 44 deleted snippets, but the point stands. Let's put this into perspective - the combined number of deleted moments from the first two DVDs is less than the number of deleted moments from Series IV. Okay, they're probably a lot shorter, but even so. This is pants-wettingly exciting. It's our chance to have a look at things that are a bit rubbish! Crap special effects from DNA and White Hole! Poor jokes from DNA and Dimension Jump! A park in London, which supposedly doubles for a bit of Justice World! A scene from Camille without backing music! A scene from White Hole without video-effects! And best of all, a scene from Dimension Jump without the background being chromokeyed in!
There is a bit of a disappointment, though - the Tracy Brabin version of Kochanski Camille couldn't be cleared. You can imagine the phone call: "Hi, Tracy! Remember when we edited you out of that show thirteen years ago, because you were so shit? Well, can we sell the footage on DVD?" "Fuck off. [cries]" Oh well. Lest we forget, this is the first series to actually include unseen stuff from all six episodes. There were no deleted scenes from Future Echoes or Better Than Life, and the rushes for Marooned have gone walk-abouts. Incidentally, it's good to see that GNP have checked all available rushes, and not just the studio tapes. There's plenty of pre-recorded stuff here (most of the Dimension Jump moments) and even location footage.
Elsewhere on TOS, part two of the Lurve featurette, sorry, Funny Valentine article, which includes stuff from Last Human, along with lots of great supposition, but omits Rimmer's girl from cadet school, Sandra. Mind you, Rimmer was obviously lying about the incident, which is made clear in the novel Better Than Life.
And finally, a reminder that the jammy American bastards get their fucking DVDs on Tuesday. Gah. We should never have let them win the War of Independance.

As Red Dwarf footage isn't something that ever gets bootlegged, that unclearable Camille stuff will never materialise.
(Ellard's bound to have a copy for his own collection though!)

Man, I need to finish this article quickly...
I've said too much.
Posted by Ian Symes at January 30, 2004 10:14 PM
I've already pissed everyone off on the TOS WebBoard about me very likely getting Series IV tomorrow so I wont start here.
But i'm assuming youre getting it imported, Ian?
Posted by Cappsy at January 30, 2004 10:17 PM
Yes yes, hurry up and out do me again you bastard!
Posted by Cappsy at January 30, 2004 10:18 PM
I've pre-ordered it from PlayUSA, but the status is still just that - "pre-ordered". Has yours been despatched?

"I've said too much."
I am your friend. Your best mate. Inseperable. Honest. We're like brothers, aren't we, us. I love you. GIVE ME THE DAMN TAPE.
Seriously, it sounds very exciting, whatever it is.

And the DVD's deleted scenes look gorgeous, too.
Posted by Darrell Jones at January 30, 2004 11:08 PM
For some reason I'm getting more excited about Series V at the moment. I've suddenly realised that its the next one to be released. It's going to be oh so sweet.
Posted by Cappsy at January 30, 2004 11:49 PM
Call me for being a thicko, but can someone explain to me what 'rushes' means?
Cheers
Paul
*Waits for the name calling to start*

Rush; to move forward with haste, impetuosity, or rashness.
Rush; an unedited print of a motion picture scene or series of scenes for immediate viewing by the film-makers
Posted by Sparky at January 31, 2004 11:54 AM
It's basically the raw footage from a shoot, containing all the between takes malarkey.
Posted by Darrell Jones at January 31, 2004 12:24 PM
Thanks for clearing that up :)
Posted by Paul (TRD) at January 31, 2004 01:08 PM
Hang on, I've got a bloody multi region DVD! Why have I never thought of getting the US version?
Oh yes, I'm a fuckwit.

Here's a question, and nicely irrelevant to this thread: Do the G&T team realise that they are in fact the inspiration for the forthcoming fan commentary? Obviously GNP liked your efforts, so well done.
Posted by jesley carrion at February 1, 2004 12:21 PM
I thought that, but Andrew says in his G&T interview that it was Doug's idea.
Posted by Ian Symes at February 1, 2004 02:01 PM
And we all know about Doug's good ideas...
Posted by Pete Martin at February 1, 2004 02:19 PM
What, like Red Dwarf? A good one, that.
Posted by John Hoare at February 1, 2004 02:36 PM
I wonder where they coined the term 'Image Bank' from on their site. Was it anything to do with me emailing Doug before TOS was created, saying he could use anything from my site?

I also am pretty confident that this is the case, but the reason the G&T commentaries mad me grin is because they were aimless sessions of two mates being juvenile just because they fancied watching Red Dwarf through a microphone. This is something the fan commentaries are clearly not.

We can all have our fantasies. On a chat with Ross McGinley in the TOS chat room I actaully got the impression that mike Tucker commentating on his video footage hadn't been considered before. Ross actually wrote it down after I suggested it.
I also believe that I was the one that made them release they had used different sized fonts on series I and II and forced them to pretend it was intended and continue the pattern. I am of course, not convinced any of that is true, but it's nice to hope.
Posted by Cappsy at February 1, 2004 04:20 PM
I do like it when companies listen to their customers. After all we are not just fans :)
Posted by Paul (TRD) at February 1, 2004 04:57 PM
I agree with Cappsy about the font size thing. When I read about the 'plan' to alternate them, I immediately thought "bollocks".
Our commentary sessions weren't as aimless as they appear. They took place over two days, required quite a bit of audio editing and we had to go into Argos in Nottingham to buy a microphone! The things we do for you lot.
Posted by Ian Symes at February 1, 2004 05:08 PM
We'll get round to doing more of them at some point, I suspect. It was great fun. I might try and modify my voice to sound slightly less FUCKING ANNOYING, though.
(Actually, I don't think the ones we did are even downloadable at the moment - I must rectify this...)
Posted by John Hoare at February 1, 2004 05:11 PM
I am interested in getting some audio 'discussions' on my site. It's a shame that most of ym mates are either not Red Dwarf fans or way too lazy to do anything.
Posted by Cappsy at February 1, 2004 05:52 PM
If G&T do more commentaries, I think it might yield better results if you do selected episodes, you know, ones you particularly like. I'm sure it's not a problem if the episodes in question haven't been released on DVD - most people have the videos or off-airs (or even bloody MPEGs or whatever).
Essentially, I want you to release commentaries for Back to Reality and Gunmen of the Apocalypse on the DVD release dates.
I keep trying to get my friend to join me and do commentaries for something. I actually wanted to do one completely belitting an episode of The Office at one point. It might be fun to do a Doctor Who one, because I have a feeling the official BBC ones will never feature people whistling along to the incidental music. This must be rectified.
Posted by Darrell Jones at February 1, 2004 06:54 PM
Didn't you say you'd recorded commentaries for the second half of the first series, moss? Any chance of those appearing online?
Posted by Simon at February 1, 2004 06:55 PM
We did do commentaries for the second half of the series - but in my opinion, they weren't as good as the first three (in particular, I was very tired). I think we should probably re-record them. On the other hand, if people are super-interested, I'll look into putting them up.
Posted by John Hoare at February 1, 2004 07:00 PM
Ah, lets have them. You can't deny us your deleted scenes, can you?
Posted by Cappsy at February 1, 2004 07:19 PM
I thought the last three got lost when your computer got fucked up, John? Or was that a LIE?
Posted by Ian Symes at February 1, 2004 07:42 PM
No, I said they were *probably* lost. It turned out that it wasn't the hard drive at all - it was the modem which FELL ON TOP OF THE GRAPHICS CARD AND FUCKED THEM BOTH. So, I have all six commentaries sitting here...
Posted by John Hoare at February 1, 2004 08:00 PM
I think that the three you've got available to download do diminish in quality as you become noticeably more tired actually. Not a criticism, that.
Posted by jesley carrion at February 1, 2004 08:45 PM
Hey, go here for a really great debate on the subject of fan commentaries:

I'm listening to the BoP one right now! It's rubbish.
Posted by Ian Symes at February 1, 2004 08:48 PM
And I've just called Craig Charles a 'cunt'! Excellent!
Posted by Ian Symes at February 1, 2004 08:49 PM
I'd agree, actually. The first two are the "best".
We'll do the whole of Series IV or something when I'm feeling bouncy. I'm sure I have many worthwhile things to say.
"LOOK! ACE'S WIG! HAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!"
Posted by John Hoare at February 1, 2004 09:12 PM
If you do redo the Balance of Power one, please keep the introduction with the slagging off of John's (ridiculous) voice. That is truly textbook. And it brings in an awareness of your internal weaknesses, which is obviously a great thing.
Posted by jesley carrion at February 1, 2004 10:21 PM
Here's a question - why hasn't Can't Smeg Won't Smeg and the IV DVD Menus turned up on the BBFC yet? For a release that's happening on the 16th, it's a bit odd.
It'll probably turn up in the next few days, I suppose.
Posted by John Hoare at February 4, 2004 05:39 PM
Also, where do the commentary tracks get assessed?
Posted by Cappsy at February 4, 2004 07:20 PM
Commentary tracks are only ever BBFC-certified at the DVD company's discretion, but some are sent to be classified.
I think a Tomorrow People DVD is about to be withdrawn after some reports that the excessive usage of 'fuck' and barrage of racist jokes wasn't quite suitable for a 'U'.
