Pure Conjecture

Bear with me, folks. I've been doing a little detective work. The Image Bank section of TOS has been updated. And yes, the new pictures are up now. Another new addition to each page is the background for each picture, which varies from series to series. So, it's red for Series I, blue for Series II, green for Series III and creamy/beige for Series IV. There's some kind of link here that I can't quite put my finger on...

Oh, of course! The colours of the backgrounds are the same colours as the DVD covers! Silly me. This link is further verified by Series V using a nice aqua colour, after young Ellard revealed that the V DVD would show the Esperanto underwater, first in his G&T interview and later in this DVD Details update.

So, judging by this, what does the future have in store? Well, the cover of Series VI looks set to have a dark brown cover; perhaps it will be something Western-themed? Or POO. Ahem. Anyway, it looks as though the excellent Series VII will be all purpley. I've no idea what this could be; none of the ships used in the series are purple, and I can't remember any sets or locations of this hue. One thing that springs to mind is the dimensional linkway from Ouroboros, but that was more of a blue. Any thoughts?

Finally, Series VIII is shown with an orange background. In a WebBoard thread that has long since been deleted, Andrew "GNA" Ellard said that he was considering using an orange external prison wall as the background image. I remember him saying this, but with the forum pruned regularly, I don't have the actual quote. Can any WebBoard regulars back me up?

Of course, this shouldn't be taken as fact; it's just guesswork. It could be mere coincidence that the backgrounds to the first four series are the same colours as the corresponding DVD, but, frankly, that's unlikely. It is entirely possible, however, that the last three series have been given any old colour, in lieu of a decision being made. But the orange for Series VIII, discussed by Ellard ages ago, makes me believe that I'm correct in my assumption.

Hm. I'm not sure I like the idea of the covers being based on stuff from one episode of a series, like the aqua/Back to Reality for V, or brown/Gunmen for VI, which I think you could well be right about. The first four are good because the images can be associated with the series, whichever one it is, as a whole. Either V, VI or VII could easily be black/starscape, and I'd like to see a yellow canary cover for VIII. I think grey would have been spot on for series I actually. They'd still have red to use then.

I suppose it doesn't matter as long as they look good, and the first three certainly do. I think the white and red logo looked better than the silver one on IV, but obviously we haven't seen that properly yet, so I'll reserve judgement.

Hello, by the way. I'm new.

"I remember him saying this, but with the forum pruned regularly, I don't have the actual quote. Can any WebBoard regulars back me up?"

I don't post, but I do remember reading that quote. And, also, very interesting theories. The idea for the western-themed one for Series VI is actually very interesting. I'd have to see it, obviously, but I think it could look quite good.

It should all look very nice - I like the purple for series 7.

I actually hoped for a Starbug interior grey for series 6, but the Western effect seems interesting.

Incidentally, Ian's comment about "the excellent Series VII" seems very out-of-character, unless it was sarcasm, in which case ignore me.

Yes, Daz, it was a joke, based on the fact that VII is RUBBISH. And yes, I mean 'fact', not opinion.

Welcome, clem!

Canary Yellow was mentioned in relation to ser VIII, If I recall...It was all guesswork on the Board at the time, I think...Andrew seemed to be sounding out ideas..

All sounds spiffing too me.

Good detective work. However, I still don't buy the cover to Series VII being purple. One possibility for a purple background could be the planet which rings contain the final resting place for all the different Ace Rimmers (more of a purple hue than anything). Another option could just be empty space with a purple nebula in the background. However both seem very unlikely...

Does it have to correlate to the series? Purple's a nice colour, and it'll look nice on the cover.

What's the problem?

Posted by Darrell Jones at January 6, 2004 05:38 PM

I agree with Darrell.

How come Ian does all the interesting stuff, and I only get to report on the twatting Prop Store and cunting repeats?

You can all fuck off.

Yeah I just thought they might be looking for a certain "iconic image" for Series VII after choosing the bunk room sets for Series IV and suggesting that the underwater SS Esperanto will be Series V (both of which directly relate to the specific series)

I think your rather lovely John. I mean you don't get all paranoid about your girlfriend with me every other day for starters.

Posted by SpaceBeatnik at January 7, 2004 03:53 AM

Oh dear...wrong site Karl.

Anyway...purple sounds lovely.

Posted by Joey at January 7, 2004 09:39 PM

Thinking about it, I would have preferred a nice Canary yellow for VIII.

Posted by Joey at January 9, 2004 04:39 PM

I doubt it's all set in stone; I suspect the site colours are just preliminary ideas...

Posted by John Hoare at January 9, 2004 04:59 PM

I reckon purple would work best for series 8's prison set. I can;t imagine what they'd do for 6 and 7 - just take the colours of space ships or planets appearing briefly, I suppose.

Here's an Idea

At the start of The Series we have Rimmer who wears Blue, Then he is replaced by Kochanski who were's Red

Red+Blue=Purple!

Maybe.....
