Cappsy's Anus
The White Hole. Lots of lovely downloads. You can work out the rest of the controls for yourself.
In other fansite news, Back In The Red have a nice Series IV DVD Review by Joey Cannon. Which is rather better, I think you'll find, than this one. "Firstly, don't bother with the audio commentary. You won't be able to stomach more than one." And here was me thinking I enjoyed them...

Bloody hell, that's a fabulous bunch of downloads.

Also - What was that guy on writing the sci-fi online review? Since when was 'Lurve' described as a documentary?
Posted by Chris the Dolochimp at March 5, 2004 01:29 PM
That Sci-Fi Online review has to be the worst I've ever read. The reviewer complains about just every aspect of the episodes and extras, and then gives it a nine.

In that breakfast show thing, they decided to show how the special effects of Red Dwarf improved over time by selecting as contrast a clip from series 1 that would have benefitted special effects in no way whatsoever. And then they just shat all over the earlier series in general, to proclaim the overall greatness of 8.
You see these people are bastards. Also it reminded me of why Craig Charles is annoying in the commentaries, which had nothing to do with my original intentions.

"Possibly the biggest crime is during the commentary of Meltdown when Hattie Hayridge starts to talk, stops herself and then apologises for talking over the episode. She then naively asks whether the viewers can turn the commentary off and watch the episode without them talking."
I actually agree with this.
Posted by Armando at March 5, 2004 01:50 PM
"No Hatty, you've ruined the episode. Sit still and don't fidget or the microphone will pick it up. Actually if anyone speaks at all it should be Craig, what was that Craig, what were you saying then about Danny's hair?"
Posted by Partially Embalmed Already at March 5, 2004 02:07 PM
This is why I can't wait for the Series V commentaries. No Craig Charles. FUCKING YES!

"The extras are more impressive than season three's appalling offerings"
You twat.
"The only really bad extras are the Ace Rimmer and Lurve "documentaries". They are listed as "documentaries" but are really just clips cobbled together from the shows entire history"
I'd love to see where these are described as documentaries. i thought they were featurettes.
"Oh, and this time around they've tried to make the talking book chapters sound relevant by stating that they show the characters in a new light?!!? Er... no they don't! And anyone who is even remotely familiar with Red Dwarf will know that the books and the TV series constantly contradict one another anyway."
You ignorant, and blatantly wrong, fuck wit!!!

Although I re-supplied most of those new downloads, I only actually encoded about two of them (the 'Stand-Up 2' clips).

Reviews of the other three DVDs by the same guy:
http://www.sci-fi-online.50megs.com/reviews/dvd/02-11-04_RedDwarf1.htm
http://www.sci-fi-online.50megs.com/reviews/dvd/03-02-10_RedDwarf2.htm
http://www.sci-fi-online.50megs.com/reviews/dvd/03-11-03_RedDwarf3.htm
The Series 1 one is OKish, but the other two are terrible. I especially like the series 3 one, where he criticised the extras without mentioning three of the most important ones. I also like the way he changes his mind about the menus and talking books, without giving any indication that he has, or indeed why.
Oh, and David Ross better than Robert Llewellyn? Fine if you think that, but why not try giving a reason. (The reason for Robert being better, certainly after IV: he gets better jokes, is a more original character, and Robert is just funnier.) There's plenty of examples of idiocy in there; I started writing an article on it yesterday, but didn't get time to finish it. I'll try and do it next week.
I do agree with the Hattie thing, though, yes.

Darrell, I'm aware that Nik encoded the Cliche stuff but if you know who encoded any of the other stuff let me know and I can credit them.

"and Robert is just funnier.)"
To be fair John, this is just as subjective and lacks just as much reflection and depth as saying somebody is "better".

By the way, the G&T website currently lacks an accumulative image of the DVD spines anywhere whatsoever. And this is bad.
Ideal: An Add Your Own Remaining Spines Feature
where people can simply continue the rest of the logo in charcoal (if they wish) or something and fill in the remaining spines with their very own speculative colours and reasons why.
Yes yes, I'm fucking great and it's a great idea. Take it for free Jesuits.
Posted by jesley carrion at March 5, 2004 07:51 PM
Well, I'd argue that "funnier" is more specific than "better". And I also give two other reasons anyway.

How old are you? Constructive critism please. Slagging off someone else like that looks like sour grapes.
BTW your website looks really poor.
Posted by Sammy N at March 5, 2004 08:43 PM
See. See how stupid my last comment sounded. I don't think this site looks poor. I just think a little constructive critism is preferable over slagging something off just because you don't agree with it.
Posted by Sammy N at March 5, 2004 08:57 PM
I was actually slagging off the mis-informedness of what he was saying, not his views in general.
Posted by Cappsy at March 5, 2004 09:47 PM
Mis-informdness. I'm going to use that word more in polite conversation.

"Look in your DVD rack"
I don't own the DVDs. And I'm not interested in buying them either. But you know, the spine image is nice and I'd like to look at it every now and then. But if people are going to tell me to shove it then fine, it's not that important. But I may have to kill you.

I never said to shove it!? I was gonna offer you a hula hoop, but now I shall reserve judgement :D I know theres some pic somewhere with the spines, but I can't remember where :\

Fair enough Cappsy.
However I do think he has a point.
What was you problem with his first comment about the extras on series four being better than series 3? I happen to agree with this. Unless both extras are the same (which they are not) then sure one set can be greater than the other.
I agree about your documentaries point. However this is just arguing over semantics isn't it? I thought the point he was making was that they were just thrown together clips made to look like a good extra.
Also, someone moaned that he slated the extras and then gives the DVD 9/10... I also think this is a point well made. Why should the extras drag down a great series? Would the extras on a movie DVD alter your view on the movie? No it wouldn't.
I have to say that I thought the review was pretty good. It's obvious that he watched everything on the discs and didn't just review it (as most mags seem to do) without really watching any of the extras. Credit where it's due - he actually sat through them... even though he thought they were poor. I haven't watched most of the extras on the discs... mainly because most of them are poor.
Posted by Sammy N at March 6, 2004 11:15 AM
Also... I've just noticed that the other review (that is linked to at the top of this page) mentions that the ACE RIMMER extra is a "Documentary".
Is it? Or isn't it?
Posted by Sammy N at March 6, 2004 02:36 PM
Oh fuck, I've just remembered something else.
