Howard Goodall! Musical! Interview!
Amusing jokes at the beginning of news stories. Why do you never get them? "Actor David Beckford is facing up to the fact that his career is going to the dogs." I mean, for fucks sake. Just slotting in the word "CUM" would be funnier than that.
Nonetheless, it's an interesting piece, about a musical called The Hired Man, a new production of which opens this month - and was written by Melvyn Bragg and Howard Goodall (adapted from Bragg's book; and first produced in 1984). The production is described as Cumbrian; I misread this at first as Colombian. It attempt a joke about that, but after my first paragraph, I don't dare.
It runs from March 27th to April 17th, and ticket information is available by ringing 017687 74411. Read the article if you're actually interested in, you know, information about the show and stuff. There's also a nice piece about the show on Howard's site.
Meanwhile, Garbage World have got an interview with Howard Goodall. He deigned to answer TWO QUESTIONS, so well done Howard. It's still rather interesting, however.
Or Howard-ever!!! See, I could be a journalist if I wanted.

Bit disappointing interview, that. But he answered them, so I put them on the site.

Hey Austin, don't worry about it :) 2 questions are better than nothing at all :)
Posted by Drzymala at March 14, 2004 01:39 PM
Yes. The two he did answer were interesting.
I tried to get an interview with him a while ago, but he was OUT THE COUNTRY.

Also: I'VE JUST SPLIT MY TROUSERS.

Fuck. I'm assuming my 8 or so questions will go unanswered.
Ah well, not the firts time I;ve pipped at the post. Well done matey :)

Either that or he's already committed to answering your questions, and thus deemed it necessary to answer only two of my questions. The amount of questions I had was, admittedly, rather large, but only answering two is a bit of a let-down.

On a different note, had anyone else heard of the Rob Grant/Doug Naylor/Howard Goodall 1989 musical called "Maggie"? Maybe it shows that I'm congenitally ignorant, but I'd not heard of that prior to the interview.
Posted by Austin Ross at March 14, 2004 07:45 PM
Well i'm not expecting getting any of mine now. Never mind, well done on getting something out of him. He's been out of the country quite a bit recently.
Posted by Cappsy at March 14, 2004 07:46 PM
Nope, never heard of it before!
Posted by Cappsy at March 14, 2004 08:00 PM
This is confusing. It can't be the Spitting Image musical special 'The Sound of Maggie!', as Grant and Naylor had left by then and Goodall never worked on SI. How odd.

Some INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM is needed, I think.

Don't look at us.
Posted by Rimmer at March 14, 2004 09:08 PM
Yes, I've given Rimmer some webspace. What's your point?
Posted by John Hoare at March 14, 2004 09:08 PM
Good old investigative journalism. Garbage World has once again updated, with information on Maggie.

STOP BEING GOOD.

It was made by the BBC and featured the voice of Steve Nallon. It's not mentioned in Mark Lewisohn's book, surprisingly.
Sounds like the BBC's attempt to get some of the action that Spitting Image was enjoying.
I'd *love* to see it. For Red Dwarf rarities, it beats bootlegged VideoArts films with Danny John-Jules cameos in them anyway.

After looking at my website himself, Mr. Goodall is prepared to answer another two questions, and possibly another two later on in the year. Excellent.
Posted by Austin Ross at March 16, 2004 01:11 PM
Marvellous! I like the idea of him rationing himself.

I wonder if Howard is going to do the music for the film. They HAVE to keep the Red Dwarf theme, the 2001-style one in the first two series. Maybe they could also do a speed-punk version of the end credits song.
Whatever happens, I hope they use model effects and not CG. Using models would bring the real spirit of Dwarf to the screen, instead of reminding us of crappy Series VIII and remastered series computer shots.

Austin's Howard Goodall Interview now updated. And, if I may say so, they were very good questions, with very good answers. Even if Howard does confuse Blue with Rimmerworld.
Posted by John Hoare at April 6, 2004 05:04 PM
Excellent, that's become a great interview now.
Posted by Darrell Jones at April 6, 2004 05:23 PM
With possibly more to come. It'll probably be awhile before he answers any more questions, though.
Posted by Austin Ross at April 6, 2004 05:29 PM
We've got at least one good interview in the pipeline. Possibly a couple more, too.
Posted by John Hoare at April 6, 2004 05:34 PM
When can we expect to see these interviews?
Posted by Austin Ross at April 6, 2004 06:10 PM
NEXT YEAR BECAUSE I'M DOING THEM.
Erm, I don't know. I've got one definite, but he's currently really busy, so it's a question of pinning him down. I suspect in a couple of weeks we'll have something. The other two we've got contacts for them, and sent off e-mails, but we've not actually had a reply from them personally yet.

Bloody hell! Just noticed Cappsy's Goodall interview too - why didn't you mention it?! It's great!
Meanwhile, I should have the CD of '20 Great Golden Gobs' soon, so Cappsy will eventually be hosting a selection of Grant Naylor / Chris Barrie related Spitting Image records. Yay for that.

It's only just gone online! Give me a chance!
And: excellent.
