That Dr Spock Type Stuff

Oh no, I've wasted my life:

Sarah Beeney Property Ladder presenter

Red Dwarf because I don't get anything to do with space, it just goes right over my head all that Dr Spock type of stuff - although Craig Charles is quite funny.

Well, frankly I'm just going to go and close down the site now. I've realised the error of my ways. Still, never mind - there's plenty of other well-thought-through opinions in the piece. The Independent is obviously the bastion of Good British Journalism. Where else would I find out that It Ain't Half Hot Mum was "ridiculous"?

I heard that 6.55 this morning, on my way to work.

It worries me that some people's first episode may have been White Hole... and they just gave up after that.

Posted by Andrew D at March 27, 2004 06:17 PM

White Hole is not that hard to understand. Neither are any of the other episodes. (Well, all right, Only the Good makes no sense, but that doesn't have anything to do with science. Or, indeed, Dr. Spock. And I would assume this person didn't mean this Dr. Spock.)

Posted by Austin Ross at March 27, 2004 06:23 PM

Sarah Beeney is a cock. Clearly.

:D

Posted by Drzymala at March 27, 2004 06:49 PM

"RIMMER: The microbe's Chamelionic...."

So yeah! "Only the good" makes perfect sense if you know where to look!

Posted by MJN SEIFER at March 27, 2004 08:11 PM

Only the Good is rubbish from a storytelling point of view, which is precisely why I said "that doesn't have anything to do with science." I won't bother to go through the individual reasons why it's rubbish, but if you are interested, read this.

Posted by Austin Ross at March 27, 2004 08:31 PM

I think some of RD is hard to get if you're not used to sci-fi, but so is Star Trek, Star Wars and all the others - doesn't make them bad shows. Certainly doesn't make the Dwarf a bad SITCOM. Sarah Beeney must be killed.

I mut say that 'It Ain't Half Hot Mum' was utter crap. Bigoted crap at that. Tatchell has a good point about 'Are You Being Served?'I reckon. Hoorah to him.

Posted by Chris the Dolochimp at March 27, 2004 11:17 PM

I found quite a few odd comments in that lot, but
everyone is entitled to a view point..I'm certainly not going to take a 'Property Ladder presenters' view to heart. I never liked 'are you
being served' but at least John Inmans Character
was sort of likeable unlike the women with the over active 'Pussy'...Love thy Neigbour was pretty dire and is now codemned as Racist, But I seem to recall Rudolph Walkers Character always got the upper hand and the White guy was shown to be a Prat as well as a racist. I think times have changed a lot since many of these programmes were made and far less people accept Racism and Homophobia now than did in those days. At the time they were made, these shows may well have been in line with the Nations thinking, sad as that may sound...

> I mut say that 'It Ain't Half Hot Mum' was utter crap. Bigoted crap at that.

BUH DUH MUH NUH WHEN'S BO SELECTA ON?

Posted by Darrell Jones at March 28, 2004 02:17 AM

The only *Bad* part of "Only the good...." is that the Mirror world is never explained... it's all like; "We need a cure... what should we do? Oh! How about a mirror universe!! Forget that we have no clue HOW I KNOW THEY EXIST but I just know they do!!" But other than that a brilliant episode!

Posted by MJN SEIFER at March 28, 2004 03:11 PM

MJN is this: Correct

IMO

Posted by Drzymala at March 28, 2004 03:13 PM

Sarah Beeney is probably a closet rabid fan, and her reference to "Dr Spock" is about the unmade Red Dwarf III episode 'Dad'.

Posted by John Hoare at March 28, 2004 05:24 PM

"But everyone is entitled to a view point.."

Precisely.

Unless they're are quite blantantly wrong.

Posted by Pete Martin at March 29, 2004 11:22 AM

A lot of people thinking Red Dwarf is shit are this: correct. Three remastered series plus series 7 & 8 make for one crappy sci-fi comedy series if you ask me.

But Craig Charles, he was always quite funny in it, so.

Posted by jesley carrion at March 29, 2004 11:45 AM

By the way - what the fuck is that weird version of the Red Dwarf ship at the end of Nanarchy? Was it an error because it went back to the proper one when they re-filmed that sequence for Back in the Red Part 1?

Posted by Being Ironic at March 29, 2004 11:45 AM

Whats remastered got to do anything!? These don't cancel out the originals you fuckin' cock arse

Posted by Drzymala at March 29, 2004 01:11 PM

"you fuckin' cock arse"

Has a ring to it.

Posted by Darrell Jones at March 29, 2004 06:54 PM

I just meant that if somebody was tuning into Red Dwarf in the late-nineties they might have received a slightly different view of it than we did, perhaps. I would understand entirely if somebody said the series was shit if they revealed themselves to only be aware of the remastereds and 7 & 8.

Anyway, I love dragging things back to the remastereds and 7 & 8 and will continue to do so until the day I don't.

Posted by jesley carrion at March 30, 2004 09:48 AM

Thing is, Re-Mastereds aren't actually shit in themselves. They've still got (most of) the same jokes and the same stories; it's just the film-effect and the CGI that are truly shit. Anyone who sees, say, Queeg in its Re-Mastered state will have the same reaction to those of us who saw it originally, although perhaps slightly diluted.

Posted by Ian Symes at March 30, 2004 01:24 PM

Model effects didn't make Red Dwarf great (just more great) and CGI doesn't make it crap (just a bit crap).

My main problem with Remastered shite, is that it was an obscene waste of money and completely 100% pointless.

Anyway, I agree with Jesley in that anyone who's seen the newer episodes (&, a bit...but mainly 8) would be rather unimpressed/appalled by the show and would be put off enough to contribute in a rather poor article. Consider :

Much as I like her contribution to Men Behaving Badly and am rather unfazed by Avid Merrion's comedy credentials, Beryl Vertue is obviously wrong when she labels "Bo Selecta" a sitcom.

While I share his views on "Are You Being Served", suggesting that not many people watched it, shows that Bestie is back on the bottle. Like a shedload of shitcoms, many are ridiculously, depressingly popular.

And, the day that Linda Robson has the audacity to slate another sitcom is a very dark day indeed...

Posted by Pete Martin at March 30, 2004 01:41 PM

But let's get back to the point anyway: Craig Charles was quite funny, wasn't he, in that Red Dwarf one.

Posted by jesley carrion at March 30, 2004 03:26 PM

Beryl Vertue doesn't call 'Bo Selecta' a sitcom though.

Posted by Darrell Jones at March 30, 2004 05:21 PM

Shite though they are, the CGI and the pencil-shaped ship in Re-Mastered don't irritate me nearly as much as the replacement of Felicity Kendall's bottom with Marylin Monroe's.
Just so long as the Americans get the reference, never mind that the line is rendered completely unfunny..

Posted by clem at March 30, 2004 05:26 PM

Well to be fair it's nothing worse than the Americanisation from Series IV onwards...

Still annoying though.

Posted by Cappsy at March 30, 2004 09:23 PM

> Model effects didn't make Red Dwarf great (just more great) and CGI doesn't make it crap (just a bit crap).

Yes. I tried to say this earlier, but failed.

Posted by Ian Symes at March 30, 2004 09:30 PM

"Beryl Vertue doesn't call 'Bo Selecta' a sitcom though."

Well, maybe...but since it's from a article featuring people nominating their "most despised sit-coms of all time", I'm not going to let it pass.

Posted by Pete Martin at March 30, 2004 10:35 PM

Not really relevant to this article (and who really cares what this woman thinks? It's like the guys Danny John-Jules mentions in one of the interviews, who come up and say "That show you're on, that's rubbish. What do you play, a Dracula?"), but I just wanted to leave a comment saying how utterly awesome I think this site is. Discovered it last night and spent far too much of the small hours reading all the articles and stuff. Keep it up chaps.
