Doctor Oi!
As we are all no doubt aware, Doctor Who is returning for a new series at the end of this year. This is marvellous, obviously, and all the signs are ominously good. However, according to The Mirror, the new series might not be quite as original as we'd hoped:
DOCTOR Who is going to face an enemy even worse than the Daleks - in the shape of David Beckham.
In the new series, aliens intent on conquering the earth use the waxworks at Madame Tussauds to terrorise the capital.
A lifelike dummy of the 29-year-old England captain will lead a horde of modelled celebs in a raid on Downing Street. These could include Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Harrison Ford and even Madonna.
Or, they could use Elvis Presley, Mother Theresa, Ghandi, Jean Paul Satre and Noel Coward. Bear in mind, though, that the story comes from The Mirror - given their recent form, they could be writing about what they imagine a new series might be like. And even if it's true, I'm not the type to go around shouting "plagiarism" everytime someone has a similar idea to someone else.
Thanks to radio's own Mitch Benn for pointing this out. Given that this story is a bit of a non-entity, feel free to use this thread as your general Doctor Who discussion place. I've never been a massive fan, but I know some of you lot are.
Comments
I can't make my mind up about this new series of Doctor Who at the moment if I'm honest.
I'm too young for Doctor Who really, but I have the 30th Anniversary Tardis Set from one relative and the episodes on that bad. Generally however, 80's Doctor Who was disappointing. 'The Terror of the Vervoids' is my favourite episode from then, even if they have 'space turbulence' in it! :)

"OK, this show is British and a little obscure and British, but at the beginning of one of their seasons (it was the 5th or 6th, I think), it was revealed that the crew had misplaced their spaceship. The spaceship's name is Red Dwarf. The show is called Red Dwarf. So after that, basically, the very title of the show no longer had any meaning, and oddly, neither did the show itself."
Oh dear.

The Doctor must battle evil wax versions of Julia Roberts and Madonna? The safety of the Universe is clearly at stake.
I've seen that Jump the Shark page. It seems like not many people understand Series VI.

... except it's already been revealed that the first story is likely to be a new Autons story. You know, the Autons. The shop dummies, from that old Jon Pertwee story. Scary, they were. Anyway, the Tussauds thing is clearly going to be an updating of that.
And, you know, seeing as "Terror of the Autons" predates Meltdown by a good quarter of a century or so, I don't think it's time for GNP to be calling their lawyers just yet...

Doctor Who first did the waxwork thing 34 years ago in 'Spearhead From Space' (first colour story, first Pertwee story, first seventies story, first story made entirely on film). This will just be an update of that, presuming it's true (and it sounds pretty believable - the Autons have been confirmed as returning).
Looky - here be some visual proofs of picturephoto from the 1970 version of television:

Oh, yes. Spearhead from Space. Silly me. Why did I think it was called Terror of the Autons - was that the novelisation or something?

That was the superior sequel the year after, which introduced the Master.
I wish they'd hurry up and bring it out on DVD - I'm not paying 35 for the BBC video of it.
