Ian's Newsround - 27/02/04

Why are Brazillians good in bed? They can lob Seaman from 30 yards. HAHAHA.Nothing terribly exciting on TOS this week, but they deserve a week off. They can't keep up their full tilt, full power, red hot, maximum pace all the time. The most important thing is an appeal for votes in the British Video Association Awards. Red Dwarf III isn't nominated, but that's not suprising when it's up against quality DVDs such as Rory McGrath's More Own Goals And Gaffes and David Seaman's Goalkeeping Nightmares (pictured). So, go on, you fuckers. Vote for TEH DWARD.

In other news, fan club magazine Better Than Life is on its way to members, and is previewed here. I'll do a little write-up when I get it, I imagine. Apparantly, the featured episode is something called Time Slides. I don't want to be a pedant, but surely knowing the name of the episodes is pretty vital for people who work for the fan club. Having a magazine more frequently than every five months would be nice too. It would mean that having a "coming soon" plug for the Series IV DVD on the front cover wouldn't look so silly.

A couple more news items; firstly, one about the Prop Store of London. Just the one item has been added since our last update: an unfinished GELF-like arm! That's fairly exciting. It's also revealed that the mysterious "Talkie Sewing Machine" was seen in Blue. Was the sewing machine originally supposed to talk? Was any of this shot? Gah, November 2005 is a long time away. And finally, The London Film And Comic Con will be giving away lovely posters, based on the Series IV DVD cover. Bah, I wish I could go. I'm entertaining several Dwarf fan reprobates from off of the internet that weekend. Are any of you lot going?

I really, really, *really* hate the logo for BTL, you know.

And don't knock the McGrath...

A new design is badly called for, I agree!

Posted by Drzymala at February 27, 2004 09:24 PM

A new design is needed for G&T as well. I'm working on it, bud.

Posted by Cappsy at February 27, 2004 09:46 PM

he probably means a new header, like i will have, not a logo like for dj, say

Posted by Drzymala at February 27, 2004 09:56 PM

Actually, the whole site will be redesigned, to, you know, actually be nice. Seeing as how G&T likes anniversaries, you might be able to guess the date it's planned for...

Posted by John Hoare at February 27, 2004 10:00 PM

Well, it seems fine anyways, basic is good, just don't make it too busy, IMO :)

Posted by Drzymala at February 27, 2004 10:02 PM

Yeah, I know what you mean.

I think the site looks fine currently when you're into actual articles, but the front page is a bit bare. I have no idea how different it'll all end up, but I promise I won't make it too fussy...

Posted by John Hoare at February 27, 2004 10:03 PM

It's not long since your last revamp though. Never the less, i'll look forward to the new look.

Posted by Cappsy at February 27, 2004 10:04 PM

Oh, and our current logo is shit. No two ways about it.

Posted by John Hoare at February 27, 2004 10:04 PM

I was never that happy with the last revamp. I think it worked on a usability level (the old system with a huge month's worth of news/site updates was just ridiculous) but I was never that keen on the current logo and front page. It was a complete rush job.

It'll probably just be a development of the current look, with a nice logo and a better front page - unless I suddenly get inspiration, which is possible...

"AWARD! AWARD!"

Is this a Father Jack quote?

Yes. A coconut for Mr. clem, please.

Posted by Ian Symes at February 28, 2004 01:36 PM

G&T's HTML is a bit (well, very) dodgy really, and I write it from scratch. Another reason for the revamp is to make the site a lot more accessible.

Posted by John Hoare at February 28, 2004 01:38 PM

I wish they could make summat new, either series or film to actually boost the number of RD sites. G&T rips the piss out of all of us with news and sheer ammount of time and effort put into reviews. White Hole with the interviews and exclusive stuff too.

Then I look at me, with what I've got ..... :D

Ahem.

David Seaman's Goalkeeping Nightmares got the nod above Red Dwarf III? That's disgraceful. I recieved Mr Seaman's DVD for Christmas. It was on Ebay by December 29th. If this is the quality of the rivals, does Grant Naylor really want to win such a crap award?

I think G+T looks great. However, I'd like the links to open in different windows. That would be great.

Posted by Pete Martin at February 28, 2004 08:57 PM

There's a reason why G&T links to other sites don't open in different windows; it annoys the fuck out of some people, who don't want new windows opening everywhere.

I do know some people like another window opening, however. Personally I fall into the first category, and think that that kind of thing should be under browser/user control, rather than individual websites. Just right-click on the link and open it in a new window.

Anyway, don't worry everyone - I don't intend to turn the site into some complicated mess...

Posted by John Hoare at February 28, 2004 09:16 PM

The main thing I want to do is to implement 'content recognition' (i thinbk that's what it's called. When you can update the site Blogger styleee rather than arsing about. I assume that's what you in place on here?

Posted by Cappsy at February 28, 2004 09:57 PM

A content management system, it's called. Yes, that's what's used here - I use Movable Type ( http://www.movabletype.org/ ), which is very nice indeed. There are loads of others you might want to look at, though.

Posted by John Hoare at February 28, 2004 10:07 PM

Cheers John. I'll have a shufty.

Posted by Cappsy at February 28, 2004 10:12 PM

I looked at that a few weeks back and didn't have a bloody clue how to use it :D

Posted by Drzymala at February 29, 2004 09:50 AM

I'm with Pete on the links in a new window thing. It's all too easy to go off to another site and forget to come back to read the rest of the article!

Posted by Daisy at March 2, 2004 06:47 PM

I think the thing is that you can choose to open the link in a new window by right-clicking (in most browsers); it's not nice to force that behaviour on people who don't want it.

Posted by John Hoare at March 2, 2004 07:17 PM

"I do know some people like another window opening, however."

I'm one of these people, because I like to re-trace my steps. However I find it annoying when the websites do it for me. If I want to open something in a new window, I'll right-click and say so. If not, then I left-click. Being in such control is how I remain so above everything there is in the world.
